PhD Candidate 'Rainfall Monitoring Using Microwave Links' The Netherlands

Functieomschrijving
We ask:
A PhD candidate holding an MSc degree in environmental science, civil/environmental/electrical engineering, or physics to work on a PhD project “Real-time Precipitation Monitoring Using Commercial Cellular Telephone Networks”, funded by the Netherlands Technology Foundation STW. The selected candidate will employ attenuation data from microwave links in France and The Netherlands (both from commercial cellular telephone networks and dedicated research links) to generate accurate high-resolution rainfall time series. In particular, he/she will focus on retrieval algorithm development, quality assessment, validation against independent rainfall measurements from disdrometers, rain gauges and weather radar, as well as the synergetic use of data from microwave links and other rainfall sensors. The developed rainfall time series may also be empolyed in urban hydrology.

Functie-eisen
Further requirements:
MSc degree in a relevant field of science or engineering, an interest in (microwave) remote sensing applied to hydrology and meteorology, proficiency in computer programming (e.g. R, C, Linux), excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work efficiently alone as well as in a team. Experience with handling large-scale data sets and a strong quantitative background (e.g. radiative transfer, statistics) preferred. Experience with setting up hydrometeorological field experiments is an asset.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden
We offer:
