At the Department of Plant Sciences (IPV) a position is open for an MSc candidate to complete a PhD degree in Agroecology. The PhD position is a non-permanent, time-limited position which aims at completing a PhD degree within the time frame set for a PhD program (three years full time).
IPV has approximately 80 employees, including permanent and temporary scientific staff, PhD students, post docs, technicians and administrative staff. The Department is organized into three sections: Plant production including Agroecology, Genetics and plant biology, and Urban horticulture and urban greening. The project
The main objective of the PhD project is to facilitate and analyze the elaboration and implementation of more sustainable agri-food systems. The research for the PhD degree will be conducted within a pilot project chaired by the County governor of Oslo and Akershus on development of ecologically sounder agri-food systems emphasizing resource recycling and more locally based production, value adding and consumption.
Profs. Tor Arvid Breland and Geir Lieblein will supervise the PhD candidate.
The candidate will enter into an approved PhD program for a PhD-degree at NMBU, with the intention to complete this program within a period of three years.
Main tasks
- Contribute to the facilitation of a participatory process of problem identification, visioning, analysis, action planning and implementation of improvements on six pilot farm cases.
- Analyze to which extent suggested models and solutions comply with agreed upon criteria for sustainable agri-food systems in the current contexts.
- Analyze the efficacy of the development process and identify obstacles and opportunities for the implementation of more sustainable solutions.
- Ability of independent work, initiative, and creative thinking
- Analytical ability and academic approach to research
- Ability to work in a research group
- A good command of Norwegian and English is required
Qualifications
The candidate has recently obtained an MSc degree (or equivalent), preferably in Agroecology, Ecological Economy or similar.

Salary
Salaries start at level 50 upon employment, corresponding to NOK 420.800 per year, and follow ordinary meriting regulations. Employment is conducted according to national guidelines for University and Technical College PhD scholars.
