We are seeking a PhD-student to develop, improve and evaluate multi-decadal satellite measurements of formaldehyde and nitrogen dioxide in order to test their use as Essential Climate Variables (ECVs). The PhD-project aims to improve critical assumptions in the satellite retrieval, to minimize the influence of external parameters, and it should lead to an improved error characterization of satellite-derived ECVs. Special attention will be paid to using high spatial resolution and improved surface characterization from Land ECV retrievals of surface albedo and leaf area index.
The successful candidate will evaluate the improved retrievals to assess their use for applications, such as the inverse modeling of isoprene and nitrogen oxide emissions, and a better characterization of tropospheric ozone.
The PhD student will be supervised by Dr. Folkert Boersma and Prof. Dr. Maarten Krol. The candidate is expected to collaborate with a team of 2 PhD-students and 2 Postdocs from Dr. Boersma’s ongoing NWO-VIDI project. Regular work visits to KNMI, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, are envisaged. The expected starting date of the PhD position is 1 May 2014.
The successful applicant will be funded by the recently selected FP7-project Quality Assurance for Essential Climate Variables (QA4ECV). This project, led by KNMI (Dr. Boersma), is a 17-partner effort that aims at implementing a traceable quality assurance system for multi-decadal ECVs, including formaldehyde and nitrogen dioxide. The selected candidate will be employed at the Wageningen University (WUR) Meteorology and Air Quality department. The Wageningen Meteorology and Air Quality department contributes to the further understanding of atmospheric processes and their relevance for weather, air quality and climate.
Function Requirements
We are searching for an excellent candidate with a MSc in physics, atmospheric sciences, computational sciences or a closely related discipline. Proven research experience is a strong asset. Experience with scientific programming is desirable. Candidates with good communication skills are preferred.
