The position
As a PhD student you will work within the Department of Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics of LUMC in collaboration with the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Methods of Wageningen University (WUR). Your work will focus on the development of statistical methodology to integrate heterogeneous omics datasets to predict biomarkers. There is a strong demand for powerful and transparent statistical methods for combining and analysing heterogeneous datasets and, within LUMC and WUR, various technological platforms are being developed to enable high-throughput data acquisition for omics techniques such as metabolomics, glycomics, and proteomics. In addition to research, you will be involved in teaching biostatistics and statistical genetics to students and researchers.
Applying using the application form
The position is a part of the EU funded (FP7) MIMOmics project "Methods for integrated analysis of multiple omics datasets” (www.mimomics.eu), coordinated by Prof Dr JJ Houwing-Duistermaat. The aims of the project are 1) to integrate the multiple heterogeneous omics data, 2) to construct stable prediction models based on these datasets, which may lead to identifying reliable biomarkers, 3) to apply the methods to family data for human as well as plant data.
For this project, the Statistical Genetics group of the Department of Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics of LUMC works in collaboration with the Mathematical and Statistical Methods group of WUR. Together, the two groups represent the largest biostatistics research groups in the Netherlands. The research groups of LUMC and WUR collaborate with several outstanding national and international groups on advanced data analysis.
You hold a Master’s degree in Statistics, Biostatistics or similar discipline and are interested in solving challenging and relevant statistical problems. You are a creative and motivated researcher with good writing and didactical skills. You possess excellent communications skills and are fluent in both written and spoken English.
