The Department of Sociology at Stockholm University announces a doctoral studentship in Sociology with placement at the Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI). The position is connected to the comparative social policy research carried out at SOFI, where analyses on welfare state causes and consequences are based on large-scale cross-country comparisons. Research is quantitatively oriented and based on statistical analyses of comparative social policy data that continuously are collected at SOFI. An important ambition is to broaden knowledge about social policy and integrate research on rich and middle-/low-income countries.
We welcome applicants with an outline of the PhD thesis that includes a comparative institutional analysis social policy, its driving forces and consequences, in a broad global perspective.

Requirements
To be qualified for doctoral studies in Sociology you need:
  • a Bachelor´s degree and
  • at least 60 ECTS credits at advanced level.
In section 2 of the Syllabus for doctoral studies in Sociology you will find the requirements described in detail, together with conditions for students who 2007-06-30 were qualified according to former regulations.
Write a short description (maximum 1 000 words) outlining your intended field of research for the dissertation.

Selection criteria
The selection among applicants is based on the assessment of the ability to successfully complete the doctoral studies. Special focus is on
  • the quality of student essays and other relevant studies,
  • quality and feasibility of the research plan,
  • documented knowledge in the relevant subject area and/or related areas is an advantage,
  • documented skills in statistical analysis and collection of relevant data is an advantage.

The studentship covers four years of full time studies with wages according to regulations for doctoral student positions.
